Rediscovering Music: Part 2 — Unlocking Hi-Fi from Your Home Theater

In Part 1 of this series, we looked at building a dedicated 2-channel audio system from the ground up. But what if you already have a multipurpose setup — like a living room home theater with 3, 5, or even 7 channels — or a dedicated theater room with traditional floorstanding or bookshelf speakers? The good news: you don’t have to start over. With a few thoughtful upgrades, you can breathe new life into your system and dramatically improve the way you enjoy music.

The AVR Limitation: One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Most modern AV receivers (AVRs) are designed to do it all: movies, gaming, streaming, multi-room audio. While they’re great for versatility, the DACs (digital-to-analog converters) inside are built for “good enough” performance across all tasks — not necessarily for the nuance of high-fidelity music playback. That’s why two-channel music often sounds flat or lifeless compared to a dedicated hi-fi setup.

Step 1: Add a Dedicated Media Streamer + DAC

By adding a streamer with its own high-quality DAC, you bypass the AVR’s all-purpose circuitry and instantly lift the clarity, detail, and depth of your music.

  • Entry Level: WiiM Pro Plus — affordable, reliable, and a huge step up from built-in AVR streaming.
  • Mid to High End: Eversolo DMP-A6 or DMP-A8 — audiophile-grade DACs, excellent interfaces, and support for hi-res formats.

This simple addition transforms your theater into a system capable of pulling double duty — movies when you want, but hi-fi music when you need it.

Step 2: Power the Left & Right Channels Properly

If your AVR has pre-outs for the front left/right channels, you can add an external amplifier to give those speakers the clean power they deserve. This ensures dynamics, imaging, and soundstage remain intact even at higher listening levels.

Recommended brands with options from entry-level to high-end:

  • Marantz — Warm, musical character.
  • Parasound — Clean power and strong dynamics, great value.
  • Rotel — Neutral and detailed, excellent for critical listening.
  • Triad — Engineered for consistency and matched performance.

The Result: A True Hybrid System

With these two upgrades — a dedicated streamer/DAC and proper external amplification — your existing theater system can double as a serious music system. You get the best of both worlds: cinematic immersion when the lights go down, and refined hi-fi performance when it’s time to relax with music.

So what does this all mean?…

You don’t need to build a separate system to enjoy hi-fi audio. By optimizing what you already have, you can unlock performance that rivals dedicated two-channel rigs while keeping the convenience of your home theater setup.
